Aare Gorge
The Aare River carved a gorge in the limestone that is up to 200 meters deep near Haslital bei Meiringen. The pathways and tunnels make it simple to hike the whole length of the gorge.
You can witness an incredible demonstration of water's power here. The river created a deep bed in the rock over thousands of years. Nearly 200 meters deep and just a meter broad at its narrowest, the Aare Gorge between Meiringen and Innertkirchen. The intriguing, constricting canyon was caused by "Kirchet," or hard limestone formations, which impeded the Aare's passage from the Grimsel region. It takes about 40 minutes to walk the 1.4 kilometer long path through this breathtaking canyon.
